the unpacking series

I was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to Canada when I was six. I’m not a writer and English isn’t my first language, so I often struggle with writing, particularly with tenses and syntax.

The last time I had a blog was when Xanga was still around (does anyone remember that?). I loved fiddling with CSS back then, and it turns out I’m still very much the same. Some habits never leave you.

I’m a slow writer and terribly shy, so it takes me a while to write and post anything. Thanks for understanding.

I know nothing about moons, but I do like looking at them. Because I only write at night, they’ve become a sort of companion. That was especially true last year, when I wasn’t sleeping at all and spent my nights writing slowly on my phone. I was hallucinating from the sleep deprivation (though not about moons), and writing was how I held onto some semblance of sanity.

(The moon has a secret or two.)

My best friend and I once talked about how we cope with stress. She plots escape routes; I bury things. My instinct to bury any thought or feeling that causes even the slightest discomfort is deeply ingrained. At some point, I stopped allowing even the faintest trace of a painful thought to surface; it is immediately excised. I don’t know how not to be like this. I don’t know why the hell I’m like this.
Each month, I choose a word, feeling, or intention and try to move toward it. This idea comes from the concept of a nudge word, which is a gentle push toward whatever is meaningful to you.
